Having used this (Carlsbad 2020 model) Jacket and trouser set for a year and ridden over 6000kms of on and off-road, I can offer an interim review of this garment.

Having previously used Held clothing for many years, I was forced to buy a new suit when a nearly new set went walkabout on a trip in 2019. (Don't ask - painful!). After looking around I spoke to Peter at Bartang knowing I’d get good advise which I value. I have to admit I’d been somewhat biased against Klim in that most people I knew using their clothing are sponsored and therefore don’t pay for their goods.

My specifications were: it had to be very well made with appropriate materials. I required plenty of useful well-placed pockets, tough and warm enough for the Alps where I live but well vented in warmer weather and, most importantly, waterproof. The days of having to stop and put on separate waterproofs had to end. It needed to be light enough not to stifle movement or off the moto. It had to have cavities in all the right places for adequate protection and I wanted the bottom and top halves to join thereby cutting out cold wind getting inside my ‘birthday suit’!

Well, it has all that and, from the off, has been immensely comfortable. It’s a very well made piece of clothing as well it should be. This is a premium priced garment and I have to admit, cost quite a bit more that I envisaged spending. Not an eye-bleeding cost but, a purchase not taken impulsively.

A couple of extra items worth mentioning: The suit comes fitted with top quality CE type 2 approved pads which is a nice extra as it’s ready to use immediately. There are luminous strips on the shoulders and rear of the jacket and on the sides (top and bottom) of the trousers. For warmer rides, the collar can be hooked back easily to keep the neck open to catch the breeze. Very practical double zips on the cuffs allow measured venting while keeping the bottom of the sleeves attached around the gloves. Additional adjustable vents front and rear on both the jacket and trousers gives the user full control of the aircon.

So, the question arises - is it worth the money?
For this type of quality, warmth and protection plus the superb advise and time from Bartang (invaluable), I would say, yes.

A decent riding suit should last a very minimum of 5-7 years with extensive year round use. Longer for occasional riders. So, amortised very conservatively over 5 years, that works out at around 330€ per year inclusive of sales tax for both the jacket and trousers. That’s less than 1€ per day.

As an adjunct to this review, I would mention that on really cold, windy days I’ve used a product called a Klim Zephyr Wind Shirt in between my merino base layers and the outer Carlsbad jacket. It folds up to the size of a fist and was also a Bartang recommendation that I’ve been very grateful to have on hand for over 2 years.
